Caroline Scaramanga has a background in art and design, and trained at Plumpton College and through the Royal Horticultural Society. Designing gardens professionally since the year 2000, and based in Sussex, Caroline's client base has built up principally through word of mouth. Writing regularly in local magazines, and developing a variety of lectures, garden days and courses, Caroline is keen to encourage a confident and enthusiastic love of gardens, garden design and horticulture.

Caroline Scaramanga understands and enjoys the contribution that light and texture, proportion and scale can make, and the rigorous attention to detail required together with creative imagination, to provide successful garden designs. She uses her artistic skills to combine texture, colour and structure in planting, and mathematical and analytical skills to successfully develop the levels and spaces of the sites and the interplay between hard and soft landscaping.

In addition to the diverse range of her clients' gardens, Caroline has long term practical experience of maintaining her own large family garden - a mixture of terraced, planted and lawned levels, and wilder areas of meadow and woodland. Its development included planning and establishing large borders that peak in succession from spring to autumn, detailed designing of hard landscaping that forms seating and entertaining areas, planting an orchard and over 10,000 bulbs. Like most people, budget is a major consideration and the gradual change in the garden over the years has contributed to the pleasure of its development.

Apart from designing gardens, Caroline writes about garden design and continues to enhance her knowledge of garden history. When time allows she also enjoys other writing, painting, theatre and art history. She is a keen photographer, artist, walker and cook, and is a member of the Sussex Gardens Trust and the Garden History Society.
